Things are slightly slower this week since I am done with recruiting trips. Now it's time for the followup e-mails, calls, etc.

Symphony was good last weekend -- I had a blast, blowing as loud as I could and still keeping a good sound!

I feel like George Jetson at the end of the show when he gets caught on the treadmill. I expect that to change in a week -- one more recruiting trip, and then I can shift more of my time into getting caught up, if there is such a thing!

It is interesting -- I am enjoying recruiting trips more this year than ever. It is so nice to get off campus (away from the computer!) and see old friends and new faces. It does make it harder during the week, doing 5 days of work in 4 days plus setting up the trip, but it is still worth it!

Concert with Mass Brass Sunday -- I am so glad that we rotate parts in the trumpet section. I have a blast playing the lower parts on some pieces and letting someone else sweat it. And, I enjoy playing first more when it's my turn. Big concert with the South Arkansas Symphony on November 1 -- Pines of Rome and Night on Bald Mountain. I hope I live through it -- we have 5 hours or rehearsal on Saturday with only a 30 minute break!

It's a good thing I am stubborn and refuse to give up -- there is still WAY too much to do, but I cling to the illusion that it will get better. At any rate, I'm enjoying recruiting this fall and I'm taking the weekend off! (Except for my trumpet -- that's just part of me.)

Be care what you ask for -- there have been times that I have complained that too much of my job is dealing with things that don't really require a department chair. Recently, I have been dealing with things that do required a department chair.

The little things may be annoying, but they are a lot easier to deal with. Boring can be good!

The spring schedule is virtually done -- it was a major challenge this time. The Arkansas Brass is preparing for a big recital a week from Sunday. I am looking forward to hearing the marching band tonight. I'm monitoring the game on the radio so that I can get to the stadium shortly before halftime. When that's over, I'll come back and practice.

It's hard to believe it's fall already. Time really does fly!

This has not been a good week -- everything is hitting at once: the spring class schedule, new assessment requirements, funding request for travel to the National Association of Schools of Music annual meeting -- due in 17 hours and barely begun, and I don't know what else!

However, everything is going well for the department -- we're up 27% over last year, so it's all worth it. Somehow, I'm managing to keep my playing in good shape.

But, I wouldn't mind a bit of vacation!

Wow! This semester is already flying by -- tomorrow we start working on the spring schedule. Still too much to do for the time I have, but I'm trying not to sweat it.

South Arkansas Symphony pops concert Saturday -- that will be fun!
